Fashion Week Brooklyn

This is one of the top fashion events in Brooklyn. Discover more about its history and distinctive features at brooklynka.

Who founded the event?

The international fashion show was founded by the non-profit organization BK Style Foundation (BKSF) in 2006. The event takes place twice a year. The occasion represents an excellent combination of fashion, cultural and virtual events. It is the “brainchild” of stylist Rick Davy, who formed the non-profit organization. The main objective of Fashion Week Brooklyn is to promote low-income designers.

We’d like to tell you more about the founder himself. For example, in 2006, he decided to sell his apartment in order to start a non-profit foundation. Since then, he has independently funded his vision for a community of designers, creative representatives of the industry and models.

According to Rick Davy himself, Brooklyn is a real hotspot of fashion.

Recognition and support

Interestigly, in 2016, Fashion Week Brooklyn was recognized as the fifth international fashion event. This only highlighted the significance of the fashion event, as well as Brooklyn’s emerging status as a global fashion leader.

It is important to note that every fashion season, BKSF is supported by the following charities:

  • Denim Day NYC. The organization’s purpose is to raise awareness about sexual assault and violence.
  • Art in Motion. This organization uses the fashion event to bring attention to important social issues while also raising funds for charity.
  • Beauty for Freedom. The charity assists women who have become victims of human trafficking. The nonprofit offers a number of important programs, such as art therapy and photography.
  • Soles4Souls. The foundation provides shoes for those who need them.
  • MTV Stay Alive Foundation. Employees of the organization do their best to help patients with HIV/AIDS.
  • Colel Chabad. The organization offers social services to those in need in Israel.

To support the work of these charities and young designers, guests may attend the event and make a donation by purchasing designer clothing or accessories. Brooklyn residents can volunteer for some time, as well as share information about the work of organizations and Fashion Week Brooklyn on social media.

The event is attended twice a year by a diverse group of conscious influential, fashionable and creative individuals. BKSF focuses on critical social issues such as human rights, HIV/AIDS awareness, poverty, leadership training, community development and sustainable development initiatives.

Rick Davy believes that sustainability in the fashion industry is critical because UNO data analysis helps to demonstrate that there are issues. One of the sustainable solutions presented during Fashion Week Brooklyn is digital fashion.

Innovative shows and installations

Fashion Week Brooklyn is known for its creative shows and interesting installations. For example, in 2022, the season’s theme was Metaverse Fashion, which practically marked the beginning of a new era. Guests at the event were allowed to explore the collections and offer their impressions in an original format.

This topic has emerged as a great venue for fashion designers wishing to gain popularity and recognition among clients, the media and other industry experts. Such a fashion and technology show also supports important public initiatives, partnerships, sponsorship and fundraising.

Fashion Week Brooklyn 2022 enabled us to delve deeper into the integration of fashion and technology (the possibilities of the virtual world).

Thus, BKSF is a genuine celebration of creativity and innovation. Designers can present their work while becoming a part of the global fashion industry.

Fashion Week Brooklyn 2023

The fashion show celebrated hip-hop culture, sustainability and the Metaverse. Participants in 2023 included clothing designers who presented innovative technologies and environmental friendliness. At the same time, the 50th anniversary of hip-hop and the fashion revolution were celebrated.

The event, which lasted from May 9 to 15, featured a children’s fashion show, a film screening and a digital fashion show. The hip-hop fashion anniversary show was held at the Brooklyn Army Terminal.

Transformation

The founder agrees that much has changed since 2006. According to him, the community of designers, as well as supporters of the event, has expanded significantly. When comparing Manhattan with Brooklyn, the former has a rhythm, while Brooklyn has its own unique atmosphere.

An intriguing important fact is that in May 2016, Brooklyn Borough President (Eric Adams) officially supported the event, so May 6th was designated as BK Style Day.

Overall, Fashion Week Brooklyn is a truly iconic event organized by a non-profit foundation that allows talented individuals to present themselves. It also allows us to draw attention to the importance of diversity, sustainability (for example, through digital technologies) and fashion accessibility.
