Cornbread Brooklyn: Two Women, One Grandmother’s Legacy
Some restaurants are built on a business plan; Cornbread was built on memory. Behind this Crown Heights soul food spot stand two founders — one honoring a farming grandmother in Liberia, the other cooking her parents’ Georgia recipes — and every plate leaves the line with a warm slice of cornbread as a signature.
The Concept
Cornbread Farm to Soul was co-founded in 2017 by Adenah Bayoh, who came to America as a refugee of the Liberian civil war and named the mission after her grandmother — a farmer and restaurateur — and Elzadie “Zadie” Smith, who grew up in Tifton, Georgia, and shaped the menu from her parents’ cooking. After success in New Jersey, the Black- and women-owned brand chose Crown Heights for its New York debut in June 2022. The promise: natural soul food every day, made from scratch with farm-fresh ingredients.
What to Order
The fried chicken — deeply seasoned, crackling skin — is the dish to measure the house by, with baked chicken, salmon, BBQ ribs and fried catfish close behind. Sides are where Sunday-dinner nostalgia lives: slow-simmered collard greens, candied yams cooked in-house, mac and cheese, black-eyed peas. Save space for peach cobbler and the house-made sweet tea.
