Fandi Mata: Dinner in a Brooklyn Greenhouse
Somewhere between Williamsburg and Greenpoint stands a scarlet-fronted loft that feels like a botanical garden decided to host dinner. Palms and trailing plants fill a soaring two-story space, Moorish tiles catch the light, and Mediterranean dishes arrive under the slow spin of a disco ball. Fandi Mata is the rare room that flatters both the food and everyone at the table.
The Concept
Four partners — Marjanne Motamedi, Dragan Ristovski, Emil Radoncic and Milos Zica — opened Fandi Mata in 2020 as an “eclectic artisanal” take on the Mediterranean, with chef Javier Vazquez Mariño translating the brief into soulful plates with global influences. Upstairs on the mezzanine hides Little Oaxaca, a small mezcaleria pouring agave spirits; critics have called the whole effect romantic in a fun, Friday-night kind of way.
What to Order
Build the table around sharing: a mezze platter, seared halloumi and crisp Mediterranean cigars to start, then branzino with glazed carrots and fennel, lobster risotto or the braised lamb shank. Vegetable tajine keeps meat-free guests in the game. At weekend brunch, the shakshuka and lemon ricotta pancakes are the signatures; coconut milk panna cotta closes any visit softly.
The Space
An industrial loft of more than eight thousand square feet with twenty-eight-foot ceilings, reimagined as a green oasis — press describes it as dining in a greenhouse. The disco ball, the tilework and the plant canopy make nearly every seat a portrait seat.
Who It’s For
Anniversaries, proposals in the making, brunch tables that dress up, and photographers of interiors. It is one of North Brooklyn’s most reliable answers to “somewhere beautiful, please.”
Good to Know
How far ahead should I book? Reserve on Resy, especially for weekend evenings and brunch — the room fills with celebrations.
Is brunch worth planning around? Yes — Saturday and Sunday service runs late morning into mid-afternoon, with a festive crowd.
What about vegetarians? The vegetable tajine, halloumi, mezze and a vegetarian pizza make a full plant-forward meal easy.
Can we celebrate something big here? Absolutely — private events are a specialty, with catering, décor, florals and entertainment arranged in-house.
Which drinks stand out? The crafted cocktail list and the mezzanine mezcal bar Little Oaxaca; mocktails and champagne cover every toast.
